Tubular Skylight Maintenance

Add Natural Daylight, Anywhere

How to Maintain Your Tubular Skylights

One of the top benefits of Solatube tubular skylights is that they’re designed to operate for many years with minimal upkeep. The system uses sealed components and doesn’t have any moving parts, which helps prevent dust, insects, and moisture from entering the daylighting pathway.

The rooftop dome’s curved design both captures sunlight, and discourages debris buildup.  Rainfall is typically all that’s needed to rinse the surface clean. Inside the roof, the reflective tubing that transfers sunlight through the attic to the interior diffuser is sealed. Because these components remain protected within the sealed system, the skylight continues operating efficiently with very little attention from homeowners.

In most homes, the skylight continues delivering bright, natural daylight without the need for routine maintenance.

Tubular Skylight Cleaning

While Solatube skylights are designed to stay clean and require very little upkeep, light cleaning may be in order if you notice any dust or debris affecting the system. These tasks are straightforward and usually take only a few minutes, and can help keep your skylight performing at its best:

Cleaning

Wipe the interior ceiling diffuser with a soft cloth if dust or smudges appear.

Rooftop

Safely check that the rooftop dome is not covered by leaves or debris after major storms.

Maintenance

If the dome becomes dirty, gently rinse it with water or clean it with mild soap and a soft cloth.

Warning

Avoid abrasive cleaners or pressure washers that could damage the dome surface.

Support

Contact a professional if you notice moisture, damage, or significant changes in brightness.

Tubular Skylight Repair or Replacement

While routine maintenance is rarely necessary, certain situations may require professional inspection, repair, or replacement. Storm damage, roof repairs, or physical impact from falling debris have the potential to affect skylight performance. If you notice changes in brightness, visible moisture near the diffuser, or damage to the rooftop dome, a professional evaluation can determine the cause. The Solar Guys are a state licensed Certified Roofing Contractor specializing in Solatube daylighting systems and can inspect the skylight, flashing, and surrounding roof area to ensure everything remains sealed and functioning properly.

If a skylight has sustained significant damage or has reached the end of its service life, replacement may provide the most reliable solution. Modern Solatube systems offer improved materials and enhanced light transfer compared to older skylights. The Solar Guys provide complete skylight replacement services, including removal of the existing unit and installation of a new Solatube daylighting system designed for long term performance.
